Chromatic Awakening of Lava Stone

At Studio Ler, volcanic rock—raw, ancient, and full of character—is transformed through design into something poetic and unique.
Lydia Belghitar and Jessica Richard, both artisans and designers, reinvent enamel on lava to create a contemporary craft
that is at once refined, vibrant, and sensitive to material. Each piece—whether artwork or functional object—celebrates the raw mineral, shaped by a careful eye and exceptional artisanal finishing. Countertops, backsplashes, tabletops, handles,
shelves, signage… the possibilities are endless.

Craft and Material:
From Auvergne Volcanoes to the Brittany Coast

Studio Ler’s story begins with an aesthetic encounter: Lydia discovering a small enamelled lava scene during her travels—a souvenir that revealed the richness
of a nearly forgotten craft.

Founded in 2015, the studio has since explored the full potential of this remarkable stone, capable of withstanding enamel firing. Sourced from 7,000-year-old lava flows in the Auvergne volcanoes, the rock is carefully extracted to serve as the foundation for bespoke creations.

In the hands of these passionate enamelists, lava breaks free from tradition, embracing a modern aesthetic that balances the strength of the stone with
the delicacy of enamel.

The Studio Ler Method:
From Concept to Finished Piece

For architects and interior designers, the studio offers a rigorous, collaborative process—a “four-hands” approach.
Every project, from a large-scale installation to a single bespoke piece, follows a structured path to ensure
a perfect fit in its intended space.

From the initial conversation—sharing a moodboard or a simple intention—the studio acts as a design partner,
exploring aesthetic and technical possibilities before selecting the stone for its texture and natural features.
Then comes cutting, giving the piece its final shape. Colors are developed specifically for each project, as with the handles
created for Elliott Barnes Interiors, inspired by memories, samples, and references.

Finally, the artists’ hands bring life to the work: cloisonné enamel applied with a pear for subtle bas-relief motifs,
spray enamel for smooth, intense surfaces, and the unique beauty of a material that always holds a touch of unpredictability.

Revalorizing lava,
giving it a contemporary image,
and elevating it to the level
of a luxury material.

From Furniture Jewels
to Sensitive Installations

Studio Ler’s work spans scales, from single pieces to retail, hospitality, and gastronomy projects, as well as small series. Their furniture handles, designed
as true “jewels,” enhance spaces like Rockwool headquarters, La Calanque Verte villa (Atelier du Pont) in Cap Bénat, and Son Blanc Hotel in Minorca.

The studio has also left its mark on gastronomy, crafting the bar countertop for De Vie in Paris, collaborating with Fauchon, and creating thirty bespoke signage plaques for La Foncière Samaritaine (LVMH group) under the artistic direction of Dung Truong (VNT Architects).

These projects showcase the studio’s ability to translate complex artistic
visions
onto vibrant mineral surfaces, demonstrating mastery of both artisanal techniques and the full production chain for excellence-driven projects.

A Sensitive Stop in Saint-Nicolas-du-Pélem

Located at 9B rue du 8 mai 1945, Saint-Nicolas-du-Pélem, the studio offers private visits by appointment,
where meeting Lydia and Jessica provides an immersive experience in a world
where design rigor meets the poetry of material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is enamelled lava durable?

Absolutely. It resists frost, UV, weather, and even acids—perfect for demanding interiors and outdoor applications.

What are typical lead times?

Enamelling lava is a long process. From stone selection and extraction to shaping and multiple firings, it’s best to involve the studio early. For available stone, one-off pieces or small series can be completed faster.

Can very large pieces be made?

Yes. The studio’s kiln is optimized for certain dimensions (1000 x 600 mm), and larger projects are coordinated with specialized workshops and trusted artisans (ironworkers, carpenters), with full technical and aesthetic oversight.

Applications in design and décor?

Nearly limitless: countertops, backsplashes, bespoke furniture, tabletops, handles, fireplace cladding, risers, lighting, signage, decorative plates, murals… even outdoor flooring and stepping stones.
