Behind THE ART OF MATTER…
Valentine Olivier and Olivia Peters-Desteract, co-founders
of La Collection(s), conceived the exhibition from within the V-ZUG Studio Paris.
The idea was not simply to bring pieces together, but to work from the space itself, its uses, volumes and colours, in order to create a coherent whole. Selecting the right craftsmanship, imagining pieces with artists and craftspeople specifically for the space, or bringing existing creations into dialogue with the setting: this is the approach that guides La Collection(s).
We worked closely with Sonja de Monchy on the creation of a console featuring an engraved motif revealed through raku firing, as well as on the development of a coffee table made entirely from ceramics, contributing in particular to its conception and design.
Alongside Elo de la Ruë du Can, we imagined a painted silk curtain playing with transparency and colour. Céline Martinant created a series of lava stone trays, conceived in response to the uses of the space and the presence of the chefs who bring it to life, while Emmanuelle Opezzo developed bespoke raw-earth creations for the exhibition, where the treatment of relief gives the décor its depth.
These creations developed specifically for THE ART OF MATTER are complemented by pieces from the talents’ existing bodies of work: the functional ceramic sculptures by Maxence de Bagneux, the woven throws and cushions by Toyine, as well as a selection of vases by Sonja de Monchy. Céline Martinant is also presenting decorative plates from a project developed previously, here revealed through a composition conceived by us to engage with the space. The collection as a whole has been selected and staged to create natural resonances between the works, materials and setting.
Colours, forms, materials, uses: each piece was selected or conceived in relation
to the space. The exhibition thus becomes a very tangible expression of what
La Collection(s) does every day for architects, interior designers and brands: identifying a particular craftsmanship, sourcing the right piece, or supporting its creation in order to respond precisely to a project.
